Given the limited body of evidence on the causes and implications of teacher absenteeism in Nigeria, in this study the Independent Advocacy Project (IAP) aims to improve educational standards in Nigeria and provide a clear understanding of the phenomenon of teacher absenteeism.
Focusing on primary schools in Lagos State, through desk studies, focus group discussions, surveys of 53 primary schools, and survey questionnaires, IAP sought to quantify the costs, both actual and social, associated with absenteeism. Conclusions and recommendations that resulted from the study include a need to strengthen Parent-Teacher Associations, increase moral education and counseling for teachers and students, and implement automated electronic attendance record devices.
