Improving Governance and Accountability in India’s Medicine Supply System

In this analysis of India’s medicine supply system, the Public Health Foundation of India (PFHI) conducts a Public Expenditure Tracking Survey (PETS) in two states to identify gaps and institutional challenges that impede access to medicine and examine budgetary allocation on drugs and associated inefficiencies and leakages that contribute to unreliable medicine supply, unfair health financing mechanisms, and unaffordable costs of medicines. After analyzing their findings, researchers at PFHI propose that a centralized drug procurement and decentralized medicine distribution system is key to improving governance and transparency in the medicine supply system.
